The Philosopher’s Egg – Mario Merz
The Philosopher’s Egg by Mario Merz decorates the station concourse at Zurich's Main Railway Station.
"The Philosopher’s Egg" by the Italian artist Mario Merz features red spiral shapes made from neon tubes, combined with free-hanging 3D animals. It has been suspended high above the hall of Zurich's Main Railway Station since 1992, forming an effective, dynamic counterpoint to the classic sobriety below.
The numerals pay homage to the medieval Italian mathematician Leonard Fibonacci – who used his sequence of numbers to prove that nature adheres to mathematical principles.
