Grossmünster – Zurich’s Famous Landmark
From January 2025 to 2029, renovation work will be carried out on the Grossmünster. Information on the construction work in and around the Grossmünster can be found here. |
According to legend, Charlemagne discovered the graves of the city’s patron saints, Felix and Regula, and had a church built as a monastery on the spot.
In the first half of the 16th century, the Grossmünster church was the starting point of the Swiss-German Reformation led by Huldrych Zwingli and Heinrich Bullinger. The theological college then annexed to the monastery, which was later to become the University of Zürich.
The stained glass windows by Sigmar Polke, the Romanesque crypt, the choir windows by Augusto Giacometti, the bronze doors by Otto Münch, and the Reformation Museum in the cloister are just some of the highlights that can be admired here.
