Hans Waldmann – a Military Leader and Mayor of Zurich in the Late Middle Ages
The former mayor Hans Waldmann can be seen by the Münsterbrücke bridge between the Fraumünster and Grossmünster churches.
Hans Waldmann was an ambitious military leader who achieved great fame when he and the Swiss Confederates decisively defeated Charles the Bold in the Burgundian Wars in 1476. In 1483, Hans Waldmann was elected to the leading position of mayor of Zurich and was therefore one of the most powerful and wealthy Swiss people of his time. He was executed six years later in response to pressure by farmers who could not accept his land reform policies.
Hermann Haller created the bronze statue that stands on the Münsterbrücke bridge between the Fraumünster and Grossmünster churches.
