Polybahn
The “Polybähnli” is one of the most legendary modes of transportation in Zurich. The nostalgic little train is not just cute, but also convenient.

The “Polybähnli”, as the little red funicular is affectionately called, takes just 100 seconds to travel from Central up to the Polyterrasse. The old-timer train is particularly popular with students – after all, it is the shortest connection from Limmatquai to Zurich University and the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology. However, tourists and locals also like to take a ride on the Polybahn as it is so convenient. At the top, the Polyterrasse offers a wonderful view over the Old Town and Lake Zurich.
The funicular went into operation in 1889 as the “Zürichbergbahn” and today is one of Zurich’s best known landmarks. The so-called Student Express transports up to two million passengers each year. That is hardly surprising – for the train, which seats 50 people, runs every 2 – 5 minutes.
Incidentally, the ride is free of charge with the Zürich Card.
